LET’S PLAY!

A Play-Based Curriculum through Exposure

Unlike the traditional form of education, the HPS Network uses what we call “a play-based curriculum through exposure”. That is, games and activities designed to entice children with lots of information and reinforcement. There is never any form of forced expectation that our children will understand. Despite this seemingly casual playful approach, most of our four year olds leave us able to:

  • Name, count, add, subtract, and group numbers up to 20
  • Name, basic measurement and weight games
  • Use most of the letter sounds (some beginning to read) – ALL love books!
  • Name two dimensional and three dimensional shapes
  • LOVE puzzles!
  • Name primary and secondary colors. Some area able to name the tertiary colors as well.
  • Physically move/dance in rhythm to music and SING!!
  • Speak clearly and discuss their ideas using larger than “normal” vocabulary
  • Comfortably socialize in groups and are able to communicate their needs and desires appropriately
  • Properly handle art and writing materials (some begin to write their name independently)
  • Question and research problems and ideas
  • Recognize and often use parts of foreign languages (ie. French, German, Spanish, Korean, and/or American Sign Language)

Some of our regular activities include:

  • Regular rotation of toys
  • “Table Time” with toys that encourage individual exploration
  • Free Play for social development! (4+ hours per day)
  • LOTS of exercise, food, drinks, and rest for good health
  • Monthly units
  • Monthly letters, number, color, and shape
  • Weekly special word
  • Daily kindness/consideration goal
  • Daily art project
  • Weekly math activities
  • Weekly hands-on science activities
  • At least 10-15 books read and discussed daily

Disputes are redirected with respect and painstaking care to both children to demonstrate and explain appropriate social interaction.

Our children regularly use phrases such as:

  • “May I have a turn please?”
  • “Yes, Thank you.”
  • “Why?"
  • “Please help.”

The last most important and very tangible part of the HPS Network is the pure joy we bring to the atmosphere. Whatever negativity is outside does NOT come in, ever. Our small home classrooms and environments are fun, lighthearted, and exciting. This makes everyone love HPS!
